California Based Salad Producer Recalls Bagged Salad

River Ranch Fresh Foods, which is a California based company, isrecalling almost 2,154 packages of bagged salad. This action has beentaken because of possible contamination of the salad cases with listeriamonocytogens. In the last few weeks almost 23 people have been killedby tainted cantaloupes across 12 states. Health officials say that thedeath toll of this present listeria outbreak is equivalent to an outbreakof 1998. A test was conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.After this test River Ranch Fresh Foods recalled their cases of baggedsalad. The company said this in a statement which was made on thewebsite of the Food and Drug Administration. Till now there have beenno reports on illness being caused because of the products that wererecalled.

The salad products that were being recalled by the company included:

  • Farmers Market Shredded Iceberg (eight-ounce)
  • Farmers Market Romaine Garden (12-ounce)
  • Farmers Market Parisian Blend (seven-ounce)
  • Farmers Market Leafy Romaine (nine-ounce)
  • Hy-Vee Shredded Iceberg (eight-ounce)
  • Hy-Vee Romaine Garden (12-ounce)
  • Hy-Vee American Blend (12-ounce)
  • Hy-Vee Garden Supreme (12-ounce)

These products were manufactured on the 27th of September. Thebest-by date that was printed on these products was 14th of October.These bagged salads were distributed in Iowa, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

These were being sold in the supermarkets of these states. Listeriaoutbreak was earlier linked to infected cantaloupes and it caused thedeath of many people in the United States. Many others were alsoaffected and suffered from severe diarrhea. Listeria monocytogenis a micro-organism which causes infection which can sometimes bevery serious and become fatal. Pregnant women should take specialcare as it can even affect the child in their womb. The most vulnerablepeople to listeria infection are old and those with weak immunesystems. They catch the infection very fast and the infection becomesserious. Sometimes the diagnosis of listeria infection can take sometime because the symptoms take time to show up in some cases.Some people have been reported of showing the symptoms of listeriainfection after about two months of getting infected. The median ageof those who are getting infected with listeria monocytogen has beenfound to be 78. Health officials also say that the death toll might rise inthe future as symptoms which do not show up immediately might showup in sometime.
